RESUMEN
Las plaquetas son fundamentales en los procesos de coagulación,
trombosis, inmunidad, inflamación y angiogénesis. El tamaño de la
plaqueta, evaluado mediante el volumen plaquetario medio (VPM),
es un marcador de la función y actividad plaquetaria. Evidencia
derivada de estudios clínicos y metaanálisis sugieren una correlación
entre el incremento en el VPM y el riesgo de trombosis e
inflamación. Un VPM elevado es un potencial biomarcador en
enfermedad cardiovascular, diabetes mellitus, síndrome metabólico
y diversas entidades proinflamatorias y protrombóticas. La elevación
del VPM tiene una estrecha correlación con la presentación
y mal pronóstico del infarto agudo del miocardio y reestenosis de
las coronarias posterior a la colocación de Stents. El objetivo de este
trabajo es revisar la evidencia relacionada con la implementación
del VPM como marcador de diferentes enfermedades proinflamatorias
y protrombóticas.
