Impacto del tabaquismo en el trastorno bipolar

RESUMEN
Antecedentes: el tabaquismo es un problema de salud pública
en todo el mundo, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco en los
pacientes con trastorno bipolar es 2 a 4 veces mayor que en la
población general.
Material y método: estudio retrospectivo efectuado con base en la
búsqueda en la base de datos publicados de PubMed. Los términos
de búsqueda fueron: fumar y trastorno bipolar. Se obtuvieron 18
artículos y además se buscó en la lista de referencia de los artículos
seleccionados para las referencias adicionales pertinentes.
Resultados: existen altas tasas de prevalencia de consumo de
tabaco en la población con trastorno bipolar, lo que implica consecuencias
pronósticas importantes al asociarse con consumo más
intenso, mayores riesgos suicidas y comorbilidades somáticas y
psiquiátricas (trastorno por consumo de otras sustancias) y mayores
dificultades para el abandono.
Conclusiones: para la población general existe una serie de tratamientos
efectivos para dejar de fumar de la que también podrían
beneficiarse los pacientes con trastorno bipolar. Se necesitan
estudios controlados específicos para esta población.
