Ozonoterapia: una alternativa en periodoncia. Revisión de la literatura

RESUMEN
El ozono consta de tres átomos de oxígeno y sus usos en la medicina han sido estudiados desde hace muchos años. Dentro de la odontología, ha tenido efectos positivos. La aplicación del ozono en cualesquiera de sus presentaciones (gas, aceite o líquido) resulta de gran efectividad sobre bacterias con bajo o alto grado de patogenicidad, disminuyendo su número y capacidad reproductiva, incluso hasta lograr en algunos casos la completa desaparición de las mismas, mostrando enormes beneficios tanto para el clínico como para el paciente. En la actualidad, se considera como un posible coadyuvante dentro de la periodoncia. El potencial oxidativo del ozono es útil tanto en procesos infecciosos como en heridas por procedimientos quirúrgicos, ya que acelera el proceso fisiológico de cicatrización, con significativa disminución del dolor. Sin embargo, se debe considerar que el ozono en altas concentraciones aniquila cualquier organismo.
