RESUMEN
Uno de los más importantes avances de la medicina contemporánea está relacionado con el reconocimiento de la muerte súbita. Hace sólo 40 años las técnicas de reanimación cardiopulmonar y cerebral (RCPC) se desarrollaron independientemente. La integración de los procesos, reanimación básica (ABC) y avanzada (DEF), dio paso al nacimiento de la reanimatología.
La reanimatología y la investigación básica en que la RCPC se sustenta, ha mejorado nuestra capacidad para entender los procesos de muerte y el daño ocasionado por la reperfusión tisular. Muchos hospitales y servicios de urgencias aplican los conocimientos recientemente adquiridos de manera cotidiana. La información se ha obtenido gracias al talento y capacidad de clínicos, investigadores y asociaciones médicas, y por el uso de equipos modernos para capacitar a los proveedores de apoyo vital.
En nuestro país el desarrollo, entrenamiento y difusión de la RCPC son aún incipientes a pesar de amplios programas de enseñanza auspiciados por instituciones de salud públicas y privadas. La intención de este trabajo es difundir la historia de la reanimación cardiopulmonar y cerebral como tema de actualidad ligado al desarrollo de la medicina.
