Estilo de vida en adultos mayores y su asociación con demencia

RESUMEN
Introducción: existe evidencia no concluyente acerca de la relación entre la actividad física y mental y el riesgo de desarrollar demencia, aunque esto no ha sido evaluado en población mexicana.
Objetivo: analizar la asociación entre la realización de actividades físicas y cognitivas y la presentación de demencia, utilizando una muestra de población mexicana abierta.
Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio transversal analítico en población mexicana urbana y rural igual o mayor de 65 años. Se realizaron evaluaciones cognitivas para identificar sujetos con demencia y entrevistas para conocer sus niveles de actividad física y cognitiva. Se realizó un análisis de regresión logística binario para conocer la asociación entre la actividad física y cognitiva y la presentación de demencia.
Resultados: se incluyeron 2,003 sujetos, de los cuales 180 cursaron con demencia. Al compararlos con los sujetos sin demencia, se encontró en los primeros: mayor edad, niveles menores de educación y mayor prevalencia de enfermedades cronicodegenerativas. La menor participación en actividades cognitivas se asoció a una mayor probabilidad de presentar demencia, así mismo los sujetos con demencia mostraron puntuaciones menores en la escala de actividad física.
Conclusiones: este estudio apoya la hipótesis de asociación entre menor actividad cognitiva y física y la presentación de demencia.
