Recomendaciones para la alimentación del niño durante los primeros 23 meses de vida

RESUMEN
El primer semestre de la vida postnatal representa un periodo de gran desafío para la nutrición y salud del ser humano, porque su tasa metabólica elevada y rápida velocidad de crecimiento imponen requerimientos nutrimentales mayores que a otras edades. La inmadurez del tracto gastrointestinal, de la coordinación neuromuscular y de la función inmunológica limitan los alimentos que el lactante es capaz de consumir y si lo hace, lo exponen a un riesgo mayor de infecciones transmitidas a través de los alimentos, así como a alergias alimentarias. Por estas y muchas otras razones, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recomienda que «todo lactante debe ser alimentado exclusivamente por el pecho materno durante los primeros seis meses de edad». Posteriormente, los lactantes deben recibir alimentos complementarios adecuados y seguros mientras continúa la alimentación por el pecho materno hasta los dos años de edad. Estas recomendaciones son de importancia crucial para que todo ser humano logre el crecimiento y desarrollo óptimo en las mejores condiciones de salud. Por ello, el Comité de Nutrición de la Confederación Nacional de Pediatría, A.C. ha considerado conveniente comunicar a la comunidad pediátrica nacional y a los profesionales de la salud que atienden niños estas recomendaciones para la alimentación del niño menor de 23 meses de edad.
