A finales de los años 1990 el etnobotánico Paul Alan Cox realizó una visita al pueblo indígena chamorro de Guam, en la exuberante selva tropical, en busca de curas para el cáncer. Pronto se topó con algunos hechos perturbadores que habrían de cambiar la trayectoria de su carrera, dándole importantes pistas para comprender la enfermedad de Lou Gehrig (esclerosis lateral amiotrófica, ELA) y, posiblemente, otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas. A partir de entonces, importantes descubrimientos en los campos de la neurobiología, la epidemiología y la ecología han despertado un interés creciente en una hipótesis poco probable: que la beta-metilamino-L-alanina (BMAA), una neurotoxina cia nobacterial que se encuentra en mariscos, reservas de agua potable y aguas recreativas contaminadas, podría ser un factor que desempeñe un papel considerable en estas enfermedades.
