RESUMEN
El estado vegetativo es cada vez más frecuente debido a los progresos en el diagnóstico temprano y tratamiento de la enfermedad cerebral grave, en especial del traumatismo craneoencefálico. El estado vegetativo se caracteriza por la falta de conciencia de sí mismo y del medio ambiente acompañado de ciclos de sueño y vigilia. En los últimos años se han desarrollado guías que en su definición puntualizan el diagnóstico, diagnóstico diferencial, tratamiento y, sobre todo, los aspectos éticos, morales y legales que regulan la atención y seguimiento de este grupo de enfermos. El objetivo de este trabajo es revisar la evidencia científica actual relacionada con este estado, con la finalidad de que todos los involucrados en la atención de estos enfermos tengan a su disposición las mejores herramientas para ofrecer los más elevados estándares de calidad y seguridad.
