La prevención del carcinoma hepatocelular es factible, dado que la mayoría de los tumores se originan sobre sustratos patológicos reconocidos en el hígado. La prevención tiene diferencias en áreas geográficas, no sólo por sus características epidemiológicas, sino incluso económicas. Colombo ha definido dos tipos de estrategias preventivas: 1) aparición de la lesión (primaria), 2) disminución de recurrencia postoperatoria (secundaria).
