Síndrome de fatiga crónica en niños y adolescentes

RESUMEN

El síndrome de fatiga crónica (SFC) es una enfermedad compleja, caracterizada por fatiga incapacitante, grave y múltiples signos y síntomas, tanto físicos como neurológicos. En el siglo XVIII se hizo la primera descripción de esta enfermedad reportándola como una entidad de etiología desconocida. La fatiga crónica es un síntoma frecuente con una prevalencia estimada de 24%. En 1988 fue descrita por un grupo internacional de expertos, debido a su incidencia creciente. En 1988 el centro para la prevención y control de enfermedades (CDC) estableció por primera vez los criterios diagnósticos en Estados Unidos de Norteamérica con una modificación posterior en 1994. Así como ocurre con otras enfermedades de etiología no bien definida, el diagnóstico de SFC es de exclusión. La mayoría de los casos se han reportado en mujeres entre 20 y 50 años de edad. Varios estudios han reportado la epidemiología, síntomas y evolución del SFC en niños y adolescentes. Estos estudios han mostrado muchas semejanzas entre las manifestaciones de niños, adolescentes y adultos, pero también algunas diferencias importantes. Los niños y adolescentes generalmente son llevados más tempranamente a consulta y presentan más frecuentemente síntomas como dolor abdominal y generalmente tienen mejor evolución a lo reportado en adultos. Se han propuesto muchas etiologías diferentes para el SFC. Sin embargo, es posible que la interacción compleja de diferentes factores den como resultante el SFC. Su tratamiento es sólo paliativo.
