IMPORTANCIA Y EVIDENCIA ACTUAL
Las causas de morbilidad y de mortalidad postoperatoria varían según el procedimiento quirúrgico; el infarto agudo del miocardio es la complicación grave más frecuente que ocurre después de la cirugía vascular, mientras que la embolia pulmonar es una causa de muerte después del reemplazo total de cadera o de rodilla. La neumonía es especialmente frecuente después de cirugía abdominal alta. El uso de bloqueos neuroaxiales ha sido argumentado desde hace muchos años como factor protector contra estas complicaciones.
