Efectos perinatales de la nicotina

RESUMEN
Fumar tabaco en la etapa perinatal ha sido uno de los factores de riesgo menos estudiados en la perinatología mexicana. Tenemos el propósito de estimular la generación del conocimiento respecto a los efectos del consumo de tabaco en las madres y en las niñas y niños mexicanos. Este trabajo es el resultado de una revisión de artículos originales relevantes sobre el tema en otros países, con el apoyo previo de búsquedas bibliográficas en la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de los Estados Unidos de América (MEDLINE), en la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud y en los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades de los Estados Unidos de América. Al tomar en cuenta la farmacología de la nicotina (droga altamente adictiva), discutimos los efectos del consumo de tabaco en: a) la mujer grávida, b) el bajo peso al nacer de los niños expuestos, c) el síndrome de muerte súbita del lactante. Se resume la información sobre el riesgo relativo de morir por mujeres fumadoras y sus consecuencias. Por último, se ofrecen conclusiones y sugerencias para desarrollar programas efectivos con base en la identificación del problema y la evidencia sobre la eficacia de las intervenciones.
