Si bien las fracturas del sacro como fuente de inestabilidad del anillo pélvico han sido descritas en la literatura la fractura-luxación multiplanar altamente desplazada que resulta en una disociación y déficit neurológico con síndrome de cauda equina ha sido escasamente comprendida y continúa siendo un reto de diagnóstico y tratamiento. Debido a que generalmente se incluye una fractura transversa del sacro con trazos longitudinales bilaterales, estas fracturas resultan en una disociación de la columna con el segmento superocentral del sacro de la pelvis y fragmentos periféricos sacrales, originando el término «Disociación espinopélvica
