Fusión lumbar y lumbosacra. Revisión de conceptos actuales

FRAGMENTO
El procedimiento de fusión lumbar y lumbosacra, inicialmente diseñado para control de infecciones y para poder prevenir la deformidad progresiva, ha ganado en la actualidad una atención más amplia, y el número de cirugías de este tipo que se han realizado para el tratamiento del dolor y el déficit neurológico ha ido en aumento explosivo. Deyo y cols. en 1992, en la reunión de la Sociedad Internacional para el Estudio de la Columna Lumbar (ISSLS), hablaron de un incremento de aproximadamente 20% en la tasa de cirugía de fusión de la Columna Vertebral Lumbar entre 1979 y 1987, en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, a pesar de la controversia acerca de las indicaciones quirúrgicas.
