Los virus son parásitos obligados y como tales, dependen totalmente de la maquinaria celular para todos los eventos necesarios para la replicación de su genoma. Independientemente del virus del que se trate, el ciclo replicativo de los virus tiene varios pasos comunes que requieren de mecanismos y proteínas presentes en la célula huésped:
