RESUMEN
Como respuesta a la creciente contaminación tanto de suelo y agua, generada por derrames accidentales de hidrocarburos del petróleo, se han implementado diversos sistemas biológicos encaminados a la limpieza y recuperación de las áreas impactadas por estos contaminantes orgánicos. En esta revisión se discuten los principios básicos indispensables para el entendimiento de la efectividad de los diversos sistemas de biorremediación de suelos y agua contaminados con hidrocarburos del petróleo y otros compuestos orgánicos. Se discuten experiencias relacionadas con aspectos prácticos del composteo y manejo de mejoradores del suelo, de la utilización de plantas y la actividad microbiana de la rizósfera como pieza clave en los procesos de fitorremediación, del uso de reactores de suelos activados y la potencial utilización de microalgas en la descontaminación de aguas residuales que contengan contaminantes orgánicos.
