Los componentes sanguíneos pueden ser obtenidos por máquinas de aféresis en lugar de obtener productos a través de la donación de sangre total. Las máquinas de aféresis han permitido a los Bancos de Sangre obtener multicomponentes de un solo donador para la transfusión a un paciente. Aféresis es un término derivado del griego que significa separar. En la aféresis la sangre es removida de un donador o paciente, separada en sus componentes, de los cuales de manera selectiva uno o más son retenidos y el resto de los elementos se retornan al donador o paciente. Hoy en día la transfusión sanguínea es más que extraer sangre a un donador y administrarla a un paciente, la transfusión actual procura administrar a cada paciente solo los componentes de la sangre que le hacen falta, lo que disminuye los riesgos innecesarios de la transfusión y debe de asegurarse de conseguir el máximo beneficio en cada transfusión sanguínea.
