Actualización de las guías de la Sociedad Europea de Cirugía Vascular de manejo de enfermedad ateroesclerótica carotídea del 2017

RESUMEN
El ictus isquémico es la segunda causa de muerte a nivel mundial, y es una de las principales
causas de discapacidad. Aproximadamente un 15% de los ictus, son causados por la enfermedad
ateroesclerótica de los vasos del cuello. La detección de esta enfermedad, así como el manejo para
atacarla son piezas claves en la prevención del ictus, así como la diminución de su impacto en os
sistemas de salud. Para la elaboración del siguiente documento, se tomaron las Guías de manejo
de enfermedad ateroesclerótica de carótidas y arterias vertebrales de la Sociedad Europea de
Cirugía Vascular, y se propuso realizar una actualización a dicho documento con los datos más
actuales al momento de la realización de este. Para tal objetivo, ser realizó una búsqueda
bibliográfica en bases de datos indexadas. Cada paciente con enfermedad carotídea debe ser
abordado según su condición clínica, porcentaje de obstrucción, presencia o no de enfermedad
sintomática y comorbilidades. El manejo no debe ser quirúrgico en todos los casos, pero en los
casos que, si lo requieran, se debe abordar de manera expedita. El control de factores de riesgo y el
manejo médico son de una importancia crítica en el manejo de esta patología.
