Infección por COVID-19 en población adulta mayor: recomendaciones para profesionales

RESUMEN
El 11 de marzo 2020 la Organización Mundial de la Salud decretó estado de pandemia por el SARS-CoV-2, desde ahí las publicaciones científicas han señalado a la población adulta
mayor como una de poblaciones más vulnerables y con la mayor tasa de mortalidad. Se han
identificado algunos factores de riesgo como los cambios fisiológicos del envejecimiento, la disminución de la función inmune y sobre todo la comorbilidad, principalmente la hipertensión
arterial y las enfermedades cardiovasculares. Lo anterior relacionado con el uso de fármacos
como los inhibidores de la enzima convertidora de angiotensina II, los cuales regulan el receptor ACE-2, el mismo receptor que el virus SARS-CoV-2 utiliza para entrar en las células
huésped. Las decisiones terapéuticas en las personas mayores pueden ser difíciles en
determinadas circunstancias, es ahí donde los geriatras deben actuar para la toma de
decisiones basadas en las condiciones clínicas y funcionales y no solo en función de la edad.
