ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effect of oral omega 3 supplementation in adults with
indication of major urgent and elective surgery on the frequency of perioperative
complications, incidence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome and C-reactive
protein (CRP) values.
Materials and Methods: A clinical, simple random study was done with patients
that were randomized between control group (without supplementation) and study
group (with supplementation). The supplementation consisted of 3 g/day of omega 3
orally, from 24 hours prior to the surgical event to 72 hours after. The incidence of
complications was assessed with the Clavien-Dindo scale, the systemic inflammatory
response syndrome according to the ACCP/SCCM criteria and the CRP values were
determined by immunoturbidimetry.
Results: There were included 101 patients. The use of omega 3 generated a
lower frequency of serious postoperative complications (II-V), regardless of the
type of procedure. The supplemented patients showed a tendency to present less
systemic inflammatory response syndrome and their values of CRP remained stable
before and after surgery. CRP values › 6.7 mg/L were associated with postoperative
complications. There was a decrease in length hospital stay due to the effect
of supplementation.
Conclusions: Positive quantifiable effects were identified with the oral use of
omega 3 as potential immunoregulator and reductor of perioperative complications.
