ABSTRACT
Objective: To present the experience of the off-pump coronary bypass surgery program as an alternative surgica method of myocardial protection.
Design: Prolective, observational, descriptive, transversal, of homodemic cohort study.
Setting: Three hospitals of tertiary care level, Mexico City.
Patients: One hundred patients referred for coronary bypass surgery treated between 1993 and 1999 in whom cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) was not used, were studied.
Interventions: Coronary bypass surgery without CPB.
Results: Seventy eight patients were male; the mean age was 57 years. Coronary bypass surgery was performed to one vessel (n= 1), two vesels (n=2) and tree vesels (n= 52). No patients required CPB. Five patients presented complications. The mean postoperative hospital stay was 4.98 days and 96% of the patients were discharged from the intensive care unit in less than 24 hours. The mortality was 2%.
Conclusions: The off-pump coronary bypass surgery excludes the collateral effects associated to CPB. In selected patients, the off-pump coronary bypass surgery is a save procedure that improves the patient’s recovery and reduces the hospital stay.
