Traveler’s diarrhea

ABSTRACT

Travellers’ diarrhoea is still a health problem, the main risk factors are: destination, type of trip, duration, age among other factors. This is acquired by the consumption of food and beverages contaminated by all the pathogens that cause diarrhea. The main agent is enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and even when most of the symptoms are self-limiting; infants and preschoolers can manifest with a severe and prolonged state. The use of antibiotics has precise indications, in the same way the prophylactic treatment. The basic concepts are reviewed and emphasis is placed on the importance of preventive measures and the adequate management of food, to avoid the acquisition of these agents.
