ABSTRACT
Functional constipation is a condition that affects the world's pediatric population, directly impacts the quality of life of the child who suffers from it and is a source of concern for parents. In many cases it represents high costs for the health system, since it is a frequent cause of referrals to specialists and requests for complementary studies. However, this pathology has a good prognosis if it is adequately approached with a detailed medical history and physical
examination aimed at the key points in order to identify possible organic causes and in many cases, high-cost complementary studies are not required. Treatment has traditionally been carried out with laxatives, such as polyethylene glycol; however there are also non-pharmacological therapies that have proven to be effective in conjunction with drugs. There are therapies that are still being studied, such as probiotics, whose efficacy continues to be the subject of multiple clinical studies.
