ABSTRACT
Objective: To report a case of methanol inhalation intoxication.
Design: Case report.
Setting: ICU of second level hospital of Durango City, México.
Patient: A 19-yers-old man.
Interventions: Assited mechanical ventilation, volume replacement sodium bicarbonate administration.
Measurements and main results: At admission to Emergency room arterial gases showed: pH 7.2, PO2 70 mmHg, PCO2 14.5 mmHg, HCO3 16 mEq/L, SO2 89%, anion gap 26 mEq/L, osmolal gap 20 mOsm/kgH2O. He was extubated eigth hours later in the ICU and control tests were normal, but the ophtalmologist found injury of optical nerve.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and treatment of methanol intoxication is necessary to avoid secuelae.
