ABSTRACT
In septiembre 2015, an outbreak of Chikungunya Fever (CHIKF) began in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Here we report
a case of a previously healthy girl 1 month old with fever and maculopapular rash, the child had to been diagnosed with
a nonspecificied exanthematous illness and mild reactive thrombocytosis (RT) in a hospital.
When his condition improvement after two days, she was transferred to Epidemiology service in a primary care unit.
CHIKF was suspected on the basis of clinical and epidemiological features. A haematological control revealed a severe
thrombocytosis (921,000 /mm3) and anemia. The diagnosis of CHIKF was confirmed by demonstration of specific IgM.
She received iron therapy and his clinical course was self-limited with progressive decrease of platelets.
RT is often found in children with viral infectious disease. Reports in the literature has shown an increased level of several
cytokines, such as thrombopoietin and interleukin-6 as a cause of RT.
