ABSTRACT
Surgical anatomic correction with the Jatene technique for transposition of the great arteries was performed for the first time in the National Institute of Cardiology in the year 1991. Since then and until December of 2003 up to 91 of these procedures have been done. Our initial mortality was 52%, but as we gained experience and a complete staff was formed in a conjoined way with the services of pediatric cardiology, echocardiography, hemodinamics and intensive care pediatric cardiology and also as our surgical technique became improved, we have been able to reduce our mortality rate, which currently is less than 10%, similar to the one reported worldwide. We firmly believe that surgical anatomic correction with the Jatene technique for transposition of the great arteries is the gold standard actually and its results depend upon the integration of a multidisciplinary staff.
