Procalcitonin, Bacterial infections, Antimicrobial.

ABSTRACT

Procalcitonin has been the subject of research for more than 10 years for discriminating bacterial infections from non-bacterial infections and showing benefits in antibiotic administration protocols, even in the pediatric population. Even when procalcitonin does not interfere with the initial antimicrobial management in a patient with a high suspicion of infection, its determination may influence the duration of treatment. Likewise, the identification of the cause in a timely manner is decisive so as not to delay the indicated treatment or to avoid prolonging unnecessary therapies.
