ABSTRACT
Background: The prevalence of hypoglycemia in hospitalized diabetic patients
can up to 25% and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Few studies
analyze the effectiveness of preventive measures of hypoglycaemia.
Objective: To analyze the prevalence of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients admitted
to an Internal Medicine service of a tertiary hospital before and after the implementation
of corrective/preventive measures and adherence to them.
Materials and Methods: Quasi-experimental study before-after, done from September
14 to November 21, 2017, in which corrective measures were implemented.
Prevalence of hypoglycemia was determined before and after the intervention.
Results: Prevalence of hypoglycemia before and after the intervention was 12%;
66.7% occurred before breakfast (9:00 h). The adherence to intravenous insulin protocol
was of 9.4%.
Conclusion: The performance of capillary glycemia should be protocolized at
7:00 am to reduce inadvertent hypoglycemia. It is a priority to improve adherence to
measures that may help to reduce the prevalence of hospital hypoglycemia.
