On 7 January 2020, the new SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) was officially recognized by the Chinese authorities as the causal agent of a series of pneumonia cases diagnosed in Wuhan, China, during the previous month (December/2019). The disease causing the virus
has been named Novel Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 in its original language giving rise to its
well-known acronym COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern on 30 January 20202, and a pandemic on the following 11 March3.
