ABSTRACT
Introduction: Several investigations substantiate the relation between periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases of ischemic origin. Objective: To evaluate the association of periodontal disease and atherothrombotic risk factors in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Methods: A case-control study was conducted in the coronary care room of Hospital Provincial Universitario Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Holguín, Cuba. They were diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome and controls were matched by age and sex: 54 patients of both sexes, between 40 and 80 years old for each group respectively. Traditional atherogenic risk factors were explored and the World Health Organization-reviewed Russel's periodontal index was determined. Theoretical, empirical, descriptive and inferential statistics methods were used.
Results: Code eight with advanced periodontal destruction predominated in 59.26% of cases and the most affected age group was 60-69 years, with 24.07%; 74.07% of patients with acute coronary syndrome presented periodontitis to some degree; 75.92% suffered from high blood pressure and 72.22% had smoking habit.
Conclusions: There was a statistical association between periodontal disease and acute coronary syndrome. The group of patients with heart disease was the most affected periodontally and with predominance of high blood pressure and smoking.
