ABSTRACT
Odontoid fracture occurs in a high percentage of all cervical spine fractures.
In two opposite age groups, young adults for high-energy trauma and older
adults for low-energy trauma. Diagnosis is performed with imaging studies
which allow the Aderson and D`Alonzo classification to be applied to the types
of odontoid fractures. This classification is used in clinical practice as a
treatment guide; together with specific indications, it is possible to determine
cases of surgical management. According to the criteria, the most appropriate
for each case is chosen from the different surgical approaches. Surgical
techniques as treatment of odontoid fracture, have advantages and
disadvantages for the recovery of the patient.
