ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the serum concentration of omentin-1 in patients with gestational
diabetes mellitus and to establish its relationship with the inflammatory process,
evaluated through the measurement of PCR, MCP-1 and TNF-alpha.
Material and Method: Transversal, comparative study, with non-probabilistic
sampling for convenience, carried out between January and December 2019 in patients
with gestational diabetes mellitus and healthy pregnant women attended for elective
cesarean section in the Hospital de Ginecología y Obstetricia 3, Centro Médico La Raza,
IMSS and in the Hospital de Ginecología y Obstetricia 221, IMSS, Toluca, Estado de
México. All of them had a blood sample taken at the end of the pregnancy to quantify
the concentrations of adipocin omentin-1 and inflammatory molecules.
Results: Thirty-eight patients with gestational diabetes and 38 without were studied.
Serum levels of omentin-1 were lower in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus
compared with those of the control group [median (interquartile range), 449.6 ng/
mL (384.4-502.3)
vs 573.8 ng/mL (439.3-639.2), p = 0.002]. Likewise, they inversely
related with MCP-1 (r = -0.317, p = 0.017) and TNF-alpha (r = -0.280, p = 0.037);
however, there was no relation with CRP (r = -0.071, p = 0.602). In multivariate
analysis, the predictor factor for omentin-1 was the BMI at the end of gestation (beta
= -0.318, p = 0.021).
Conclusion In patients with gestational diabetes mellitus, omentin-1 concentrations
were lower compared to healthy pregnant women, which was negatively related to
inflammatory molecules. The body mass index at the end of the pregnancy influenced
these observations.
