ABSTRACT
Introduction: The presence of atheromatous plaque in the carotid arteries is the main cause of stenosis in such vessels. There is proved relationship with cerebrovascular events or strokes, which represent the third cause of death in the world and in Cuba. The high incidence of this disease motivated the investigation.
Objectives: To characterize, using Doppler ultrasound, the atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries in patients with cervical murmur and determine the risk factors.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of atheromatous lesions was performed using Doppler ultrasound, at the National Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, between January 2013 and June 2015. The sample was made up of 103 patients. Two groups of variables were used (age, sex, and risk factors) to characterize the patients; and intima-media thickness, location and eco-structure of the atheroma plaque, and type of stenosis for the lesions. These groups of variables were correlated to establish their relationship.
Results: 73.8% of the sample presented increased intima-media thickness and 44.7% of the atheromatous lesions were hyperechogenic plaques. 71.1% of the patients studied were hypertensive and 57.9% were smokers. 40.8% had stenosis in a range of 50-69%, and 40% had two risk factors in their history.
Conclusions: Doppler ultrasound was useful for the diagnosis and evaluation of atherosclerotic carotid disease.
