ABSTRACT
Introduction: Central nervous system tumors are a diverse group of neoplasms which includes more than 60 histological types and currently represents 2.3% of all cancer-associated deaths.
Objective: To characterize tumors of the central nervous system according to histopathological subtype in a period of 10 years.
Method: A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out with 1092 cases of tumors of the central nervous system diagnosed at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital from January 2006 to December 2015.
Results: The mean age was 49 years and the incidence was higher in the female sex (55.8%). Neuroepithelial tumors predominated (36.2%) followed by meningeal tumors (26.6%) and tumors of the sellar region (21%). The most frequent diseases were meningioma (26.2%) and pituitary adenomas (16.5%). The stage was determined in 786 primary tumors of the central nervous system. A higher prevalence (69.6%) of low-grade tumors (grade I and II) was shown with a mean age of 47 years and female predominance (61.8%), with meningioma as the most frequent disease (52.1%). Among the high-grade tumors, the mean age was 51 years, with no significant differences in the distribution between both sexes, and the most frequent disease was glioblastoma multiforme (58.6%).
Conclusions: The characterization of the present sample in consistent with other researches reviewed.
