ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hyperviscosity syndrome can manifest itself in various hematological diseases.
Objective: to describe the main pathophysiological and clinical characteristics of hyperviscosity syndrome.
Material and methods: scientific texts and articles published in scientific journals were consulted, for a total of 33 bibliographic references, most of them less than 5 years old.
Development: the increase in blood viscosity in the context of some hematological diseases, such as monoclonal gammopathies and polycythemia, is a complication that can manifest clinically with circulatory disorders and repercussions in various systems of the economy. In its treatment three procedures are proposed: plasmapheresis, blood transfusions and the specific treatment of the underlying disease.
Conclusions: identifying the presence of a hyperviscosity syndrome guarantees a more effective therapeutic approach for the clinical entities that produce it.
