ABSTRACT
The Metabolic Syndrome is the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor in Mexico, and for this reason it should be considered as a major risk factor. Nonetheless, common strategies to evaluate coronary risk does not take into account many of its components, such as hypertriglyceridemia, the abnormalities of glucose metabolism that precede Diabetes Mellitus, and obesity, or the emergent risk factors strongly associated with the syndrome, such as microalbuminuria and high sensitivity C reactive protein. We need to know if prediction and prevention of coronary events can be improved in patients with Metabolic Syndrome, once these factors are included in risk management strategies. In countries like Mexico where the Metabolic Syndrome is present in more than 50% of adults beyond 50 years of age and in the majority of patients with acute coronary syndromes, it is necessary to go beyond prevention and treatment of traditional major risk factors in order to stop the increasing epidemic of atherosclerotic diseases.REFERENCES
