ABSTRACT

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture can heal and cause plaque progression or originate an acute coronary syndrome: unstable angina/non-Q-wave myocardial infarction or acute myocardial infarction. In Unstable angina, according to risk stratification, the major components of therapy must include: 1) anti-ischemic therapy, 2) antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy and 3) invasive therapy. In acute myocardial infarction, reperfusion can be achieved by lytics or angioplasty or both (facilitated angioplasty including IIb/IIIa inhibitors). Epicardial and tissue myocardial perfusion must be accomplished.
