ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic polypoid rhinosinusitis is characterized by the presence of two
or more symptoms that persist for a period greater than twelve weeks, these symptoms
can be nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, facial pain or tightness and alteration in olfaction.
Objective: To analyze the clinical behavior, diagnosis and treatment of patients with
chronic rhinusinusitis with polyps, at the Hospital Escuela Universitario.
Material and Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study, submitted
and approved by the ethics, research and bioethics committee of the National
Autonomous University of Honduras, Faculty of Medical Sciences, from January 2018
to March 2019.
Results: It included 36 patients hospitalized in the otolaryngology ward of the University
Hospital. The average age was 40.5 ± 13.4 years, 61.1% of the cases were female,
the most common clinical manifestations were nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea with
97.2% and 86.1%, respectively, complementing the diagnosis of these patients with
nasal endoscopy and computed tomography, the pharmacological treatment was based
on topical nasal steroids and antihistamines. The 36 patients underwent endoscopic
nasal surgery, finding an inverted nasal papilloma on histopathological study.
Conclusions: Chronic polypoid rhinosinusitis was more frequent in females, managed
with topical nasal steroids and nasal endoscopic surgery, reporting an inverted
nasal papilloma as a histopathological finding in a patient, which determines the
importance of this study.
