Neutrophil-lymphocyte index value in predicting the severity of coronary artery disease

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Endothelial dysfunction related to the presence of coronary lesions is associated with an inflammatory process.
Objective: To evaluate the association between the neutrophil-lymphocyte index and the severity of coronary artery disease.
Method: Descriptive-correlational and prospective study to evaluate the expected value in 511 consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography at the “Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital” in a period of 8 months. Baseline blood sample was analyzed and clinical and angiographic variables were studied.
Results: A significant relationship was found between the greater atherosclerotic plaque burden, expressed by the number of diseased coronary vessels and the intermediate and high score syntax, with the increase in neutrophils (p = 0.004), the decrease in lymphocytes (p = 0.003) and with the increase in the lymphocyte neutrophil index (p = 0.04). The increase in this index greater than 2 points is independently related to the presence and severity of coronary heart disease: 0.111 (0.058-0.219), p = 0.001.
Conclusion: The increase in the lymphocyte neutrophil index prior to invasive coronary angiography is associated with greater severity of coronary artery disease.
