ABSTRACT
Goiter is defined as hypertrophy of the thyroid tissue. Occasionally, it may
show intrathoracic elongation, affecting mediastinal structures such as the
superior vena cava and the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Dyspnea, dysphagia
and cough are the most characteristic symptoms at presentation. Given its
slow and progressive growth, this disease could go unnoticed; nevertheless
the diagnosis can be easily made by imaging methods. Imaging allows not
only the assessment of size and extension of the mass and its relation with
adjacent structures, but also, planification of the surgical approach, which
constitutes the definite treatment of this entity.
