Update on thyroid disease during pregnancy: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

ABSTRACT

Thyroid dysfunction comprises different pathologies that are relatively common in the general population. These pathologies can also occur during pregnancy, and if they remain undiagnosed and untreated can complicate pregnancy and also cause fetal injury. The diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy is done measuring TSH levels in blood. Levothyroxine is the well-defined treatment for hypothyroidism while propylthiouracil and imidazole derivates are the recognized treatment for hyperthyroidism. The management of the subclinical patient is not well defined.
