Influence of overweight and obesity in pregnancy

ABSTRACT
Objective: to characterize the effects of overweight and obesity in appearance of complications during pregnancy.
Material and methods: a cross sectional, descriptive, retrospective study was performed at Pedro Fonseca Policlinic
from January 1 st, 2016 to November 30 st, 2017. The universe consisted of the 124 pregnant women and the sample
was composed of 69 overweight and obese pregnant women Data were obtained through obstetric clinical histories
and daily medical registries. The information was processed using a Pentium 4 computer with Microsoft word 2000
package, then calculated percentages give results to the proposal objectives.
Results: 27,5% of the age group between25-29 years were predominant, 17,6% started pregnancy being overweight
and 37,1% were obese, 42% of them gained exaggerated weight during pregnancy, 23% of new-borns were
underweight and 22,2% had associated of pregnancy induced hypertension.
Conclusion: overweight and obesity are associated with a superior gain that the recommended ideal weight gain.
Obesity increases the possibility of complications during pregnancy, resulting in a predominant percentage of pregnancy
induced hypertension and underweight newborns.
