ABSTRACT
Objective: Analysis of the bibliography on the main aspects of the pathophysiology of the acute renal failure associated intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
Data collection: Review of the medical literature in English from 1911 to 2004.
Selection of studies: The most relevant articles regarding the pathophysiology of the acute renal failure associated intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
Data extraction: The international medical literature from 2003 to 2004 was reviewed covering on diverse aspects of the pathophysiology of the acute renal failure associated intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
Results: The etiology is multifactorial. The pathophysiology is complex and not well understood yet. Changes in cardiac output, direct compression of the renal vessels or renal parenchyma with diminished renal blood flow, an increase in renal vascular resistance and a redestribution of blood from the renal cortex to the medulla are some of the postulated mechanism of the acute renal failure associated intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
Conclusion: The acute renal failure is a complication of the intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
