ABSTRACT
Introduction. Formaldehyde remains one of the most used substances in health centers. It is the second sterilization method of our center, followed by steam under pressure, so characterizing this type of process becomes necessary. Methods. A descriptive, retrospective study was carried out at the Surgical Medical Research Center, with the objective of characterizing the behavior of sterilizations by formaldehyde at 2% at low temperature. in the period from January to March of the year 2018. The variables were studied: years of use, number of sterilizations, results of chemical, biological and bacteriological indicators, times of abortive sterilizations and quantity of material processed. The information was obtained through the records of the content of charges, chemical indicators, biological and bacteriological studies. Results. There was a greater number of sterilizations in 2015 with 51.8%. The total of the chemical indicators used in sterilizations by formaldehyde at 2% in the years under study were negative, 2014 being higher with 51.88%. The biological indicators used during the period 2014-2015 remain predominantly the 2014 with 294 sterilizations with biological indicators for 52.13%. Bacteriological studies in both years studied reported 50%. The year 2015 reported a greater number of abortive sterilizations with 5 for 83.34%. During 2015 a greater number of materials were processed with 54.58%. Conclusions. A high efficiency of the materials sterilized with this method was proven, due to the negativity of the chemical, biological and bacteriological indicators. It is the second sterilization method in our hospital, with a use of the equipment 5 times per week. In the two years of study, only a low incidence of abortion processes was reported, with 2015 prevailing.REFERENCES
