ABSTRACT
Cancer in the oral cavity or in the areas surrounding the head and neck is one the most common pathologies that provokes consequences and even death.Objectives: To describe the main oral lesions diagnosed by The Oral Cancer Detection Program in the population belonging to the Dentistry Faculty health area in Havana.
Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out in the surgery service of the Dentistry Faculty in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, in Havana, between January, 2015 and December, 2016. The universe was formed by 78 patients. The information was gathered through the data collected in the referral letters of The Oral Cancer Detection Program.
Results: The 55.1% of the population belonged to the group of ages between 35 and 59 years, the 59% belonged to the female sex, leukoplakia was found in the 21.8% of the cases. The 46.2% of lesions were found in the mucous of the ridge with a 26.9% in the female sex and a 19.2% in the male sex. The risk factors such as smoking and alcoholism were present in the 48.7% and 34.6% respectively.
Conclusion: The group between 35 and 59 years of age prevails, as well as the female sex. Leukoplakia was found to be the most important oral lesion and these were more often found in the mucous of the ridge. The most relevant risk factors were smoking and alcoholism.
