ABSTRACT
Gestational choriocarcinoma (GC) is one of the gestational trophoblastic diseases, if the diagnose is early it heals, even with metastasis, but it is very aggressive without treatment. The objective is to describe clinical and pathological features of autopsies with the diagnosis of gestational choriocarcinoma at Mexico´s General Hospital during the last fifteen years. It is a retrospective, descriptive and analytic study of 22 autopsies. Of 9155 autopsies reviewed, 22 were diagnosed as gestational choriocarcinoma (0.24%), with 1.46 cases per year and with an age average of 35.8 years. Every case was preceded by a pregnancy: molar (45.45%), abortions (22.73%) or eutotic pregnancy (13.64%). The clinical symptoms were vaginal bleeding (54.5%), respiratory symptoms (27.27%) and gastrointestinal symptoms (22.73%). The clinical diagnose was made in 31.82%, 31.82% with diagnose of probability and with no diagnosis in 36.36%. The most frequent sites of metastasis were: lungs (81.81%), liver (59.09%) and brain (40.91%). Gestational choriocarcinoma is subdiagnosed and it is mortal neoplasm when it is not suspected clinically and the definite diagnosis is made with the
post mortem study.
