ABSTRACT
AIM: The purpose of this study is to identify the accuracy of Schour and Massler's dental age assessment charts in a group of Venezuelan children who attended the Orthodontics Interceptive Clinic at the Central University of Venezuela from 2001 to 2011.
Materials and methods: The sample was comprised by high quality panoramic radiographs of healthy children aged 4 to 10 years, stratified by gender and age. 3 eruption stages were considered for each tooth (bone barrier, absence of bone barrier and occlusal plane) and root formation (using Nolla's stages). Means were compa-
red with Schour and Massler's charts (ANOVA p = 0.05) distributed by age.
Results: Tooth eruption was similar to that proposed in Schour and Massler's charts, with statistically signifi advancement for the lower central incisor and delay to the fi and second upper premolar. Root formation was delayed comparing to the sample tables, this being statistically signifi for the mandibular lateral incisor, maxillary fi premolar, second premolar and second molar as for the mandibular second premolar.
Conclusions: Dental age was properly assessed by Shour and Massler's charts for this sample of Venezuelan children.
