ABSTRACT
Introduction: the association between sleep-related respiratory disorders (SRRD), and weight-height growth delay in children has been widely documented by most authors. Evidences show a high percentage of children with SRRD whose weight and height are far below the average according to age and sex.
Objective: anthropometric characterization of schoolchildren from Moa who suffer sleep-related respiratory disorders.
Method: a cross-sectional study conducted at Guillermo Luis Fernández-Baquero Intermunicipal General Hospital in Moa, Holguín, Cuba, during year 2017. From the universe of 437 school children with diagnosis of TRAS, a sample of 132 children(30.2%) was selected. Statisticians used: absolute frequency, percentage, ratio, arithmetic mean and standard deviation (SD).
Results: the sample average age was 8.67 years (SD+1.37). 54.55% were male patients. The average weight for males was 31.5 kg (SD+1.7), and for females 35.3 kg (SD+2.6). 16.67% of the schoolchildren studied were below 3rd percentile according to weight/height index, 19.70%, according to weight/age and 13.64%, according to height/age.
Conclusions: the majority of the students in Moa with SRRD has weight, height and BMI below the national average. Poor nutrition by default and low height are frequent features in children with SRRD.
