ABSTRACT
Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most frequent neurological conditions in pediatric and adult population; the prevalence in Latin America is one of the highest in the world (17.8 per 1,000 inhabitants). Pharmacoresistant epilepsy is defined as failure to obtain seizure freedom after two appropriately selected, dosed, and tolerated antiepileptic drug trials. It is associated with a worse quality of life, higher mortality rate, greater number of medications and higher economic costs. Surgery as a treatment for pharmacoresistant epilepsy has been shown to be superior to antiseizure medication with fewer adverse effects and significant improvement in quality of life.
Objective: To report the results of the Epilepsy Clinic of the Neurological Center, at the ABC Medical Center.
Material and methods: Two years ago, operational changes were made in the multidisciplinary team of the Epilepsy Clinic. We present a descriptive-analytical, retrospective study of 23 patients who underwent epilepsy surgery from February 2017 to December 2019.
Results: This number is similar than the total number of patients operated on in the last decade. Now with an average waiting time for surgery of 1.56 years, 65.2% of the patients treated surgically in our center are seizure-free or almost seizure-free (Engel class I).
Conclusions: With an organized interdisciplinary team, it is possible to safely perform epilepsy surgery, with results similar to other centers with larger patient volumes.
