ABSTRACT

Objective. To evaluate the asphyxia prediction in newborn infants of women with obstetric risks.
Material and methods. The antecedents of obstetric risk were evaluated in 868 women in relation to the asphyxia in their newborn infants; it was in order to know the predictive value of some variables of the women in regard to this problem. Results. 247 women (25.5%) they were qualified with high risk. The asphyxia was presented in 20 (2.1%) newborn infants, 15 of them with weight bigger than 2.5 kg; in 60% of them prevailed light asphyxia. The sensibility and specificity were low, the predictive value of risk factors of the mother and asphyxia in the newborns was of only 5.6% while the negative was of 99.2%.
Conclusions. The antecedent of high obstetric risk in the women doesn’t predict the asphyxia risk in the neonates, probably because the events that condition the asphyxia are frequently developed during the childbirth work. However, the cares and the prenatal surveillance should be eliminated not for that reason in the women.
